1874 Aug 11 - Dorset County Express and Agricultural Gazette:
Three-legged race: Hilier and Mendenhall (George or James?) came second and won 3s.

1874 Dec 22 - Dorset County Express and Agricultural Gazette:
James Mendenhall was summoned for selling game without a license. Excise Officer said defendant was not licensed to sell game. He kept a register of all licenses  granted in the district. P. C. Bartlett on Saturday was in the market when Mendenhall came in, and brought a bag to Mr Andrew's stall. Andrews asked what was there, and Mendenhall said pheasants, and Andrews offered the same for them as the last. He took out four, and offered 11s; but Mendenhall wanted 13s. Eventually, Andrews bought them. Crossed examined: There was no attempt at concealment; this was Saturday night. Had seen defendant helping at Mr. Green's stall. Frederic Charles Josty partly corroborated that he could not tell how he wnew that Andrews bought the pheasants. John Gowan, keeper of the stall, said defendanthad worked for him and used to buy rabbits and poultry of him. Up to Friday, Mendenhall was in his service, and he gave him his cerificate for his protection. Mr. Charles Edward Hibbs siad the pheasants were worth 6s 6d each. They were not worth as much if it was quite late, and they were stale; but they'd keep a fortnight. Mr. Heal produced the register of licences in Weymouth, Melcombe Regis, and Radipole, and said there was no such name as Mendenhall in his book. Cross-examined: The book was a transcript  from other registers, and he did not know if defendant had a game certificate from any other part of the county. Mr. J. Witheridge Beach, supervisor, said he demanded the license of the defendant, and said he hadn't got one. Cross-examined: This was since he had been in court. Mr. Howard strongly protested against such an act on the part of the Crown officer; the person who would do such a thing was more fit to live in a despotic country than in England. He also urged that there was no concealment in this case, and said that although an attempt had been made to show the sale was under price, yet, as it was Saturday night, and the bird's were stale, his was a fair price. The Bench said that, in defence of Mendenhall having produced his certificate, they would fine him in the mitigated penalty of 5s per head (20s) and costs, 19s. He was allowed a week to pay.

1879 Mar 15 - Southern Times and Dorset County Herald:
[Weymouth] Borough Petty Sessions: James and George Mendenhall were summoned for causing an obstruction in St. Mary Street. P.C. Carter stated that on Saturday night last the defendants were in the street with some trucks shouting and annoying everyone who passed. He ordered them away, any they moved about the length of the trucks and stopped again. They were hawking oranges, and and remained in the street from about seven o'clock until ten. Several of the shopkeepers complained of the annoyance caused by the defendants. Sergeant Apsey proved hearing James Mendenhall shouting in the street at the top of his voice, and when remonstrated with he became very abusive. When told he must not make so much noise he said he was paid to do so. George Mendenhall was further summoned for hawking goods without having a market-house ticket. Supt. Vickery said the reason he had summoned this party was because two or three people were in the habit of selling goods from one barrow with only one ticket. This practise was not confined to vendors of oranges, but people engaged in the sale of fish. James Mendenhall prodiuced his ticket, and siad he only asked his brother to assist him for a few minutes, as he had more customers than he could attend to. The Mayor said this street nuisance must be stopped, and defendants would be fined 2s and 6d each; the other summonses would be dismissed.

1879 Sep 27 - Soutern Times and Dorset County Herald:
Recognition of BRAVERY.—At the Temperance Hall, Park-street, on Friday evening after the business of the "Hope of Weymouth Lodge was concluded, a very pleasing event occurred. An illuminated certificate, which had been entrusted to the lodge deputy, Bro. G. Staples, was presented to Bro. Mendenhall in recognition of the courage displayed by him in jumping off the harbour wall, a distance of about 18 feet, to save the life of a little child, this not being the first time he has shown courage in similar cases. The members of the lodge were pleased to order that it be nicely framed and handed over to Bro. Mendenhall. [Probably not James but his brother George instead.]

1881 Oct 22 - Southern Times and Dorset County Herald:
James Mendenhall was summoned for assaulting William Lillington, inspctor of the Market-house, and also with obstructing him in the execution of his duty, and damaging his coat to the value of 5s. Complainant said about 20 minutes past ten on Saturday night defendent came into the building, and as he behaved in the most disorderly manner he ordered him out, but he refused to go, saying he had as much right there as he had, as he was very abusive he turned him out, when defendent struck him in the face, giving him a black eye, and tearing his coat. John Randell, a stall-keeper in the market, corroborated the last witness' evidence. Defendent said he was only crying out beef and mutton for the butchers there, for which he had not received wages, but only got into trouble. Fined 5s for the assault and 5s for the damage. Mr. Drew told Lillington as custodian of the Market-house he was bound to keep order there, but if people were uproarious he was not to use force, but take out a summons against them, and the magistrates would support him in the execution of his duty.
Also reported in Bridport, Beaminster and Lyme Regis Telegram and Blandford and Wimborne Telegram on 21 Oct 1881 but wrongly refering to James as William.

1881 Oct 25 - Dorset County Express and Agricultural Gazette:
ASSAULTING THE MARKET-KEEPER —At the Borough Petty Sessions on Tuesday, before Dr. Drew and Sir. B. Hopkins, James [not William!] Mendenhall, a labourer, was summoned for assaulting William Lillington, keeper of the Weymouth market-house. It appeared that last Saturday night Mendenhall was drunk, and bellowing near a certain stall—"This way for cheap meat! 8d a lb!" and Lillington desired him to desist two or three times; but he would not, and the market-keeper was forced to put him out, when Mendenhall struck him and tore his coat. Defendant said he was drunk, and he was set on by others to do it, but he had paid nothing for it yet.—lt was remarked this was bad pay; but the magistrates were resolved to support the toll collector, and they fined Mwdenhall 5s. for the assault, 5s. for the damage, and costs, and allowed him till next Saturday to pay, or to go to prison for seven days in default.

1883 Jul 14 - Southern Times and Dorset County Gazette:
1883 Jul 20 - Weymouth Telegraph:
James Mendenhall was summoned for assaulting his wife. She stated on Tuesday night her husband came home very drunk and kicked her violently, preventing her from crying out by catching hold of her throat, and almost choking her. He was continually ill treating her, and the black eye she now had was given by him three weeks ago. In reply to the Mayor the wife said the magistrates had ordered her husband to allow her a separate maintainance but he had only given her 4s. She then went into the union, where she remained for three weeks, but upon her husband promising to behave better she consented to come out and live with him again. Since then be had continually ill treated her, and kept her short of food. In defence the husband said his wife was always beastly drunk. He became a Good Templar once in order to induce his wife to leave off drinking, and was so for eight months, whilst she only kept it for three days. She pawned everything she could in order to get drink. The Mayor said there was fault both sides. There was such a thing as a woman's tongue driving a man from home, but even that did not justify him in assaulting her. The magistrates some time since had taken considerable trouble in making an arrangement by which defendant was to allow his wife 4s. a-week, and it was a great pity that was not still carried out, as they could not have their time taken up in this way. They must, however, protect the woman and should order him to be bound over to keep the pease for three months in his own recognisance of £lO.

1884 Mar 22 - Southern Times and Dorset County Herald:
Emily Mendenhall was summoned by Angelina Caddy for using abusive and insulting language. Complainant said she lived in St. Alban’s Cottage, West-street, and defendant had lived with her since the 5th of November. On Thursday she abused her, calling her very foul names. She had given her notice to leave at least 20 times, but she would not go. Since Christmas she had been continually abusing her. Defendant laid whole string of offences to Mrs. Caddy’s charge, and spoke with such a selection of choice language as to give ample opportunity for the Bench to judge of her when in a passion. The Mayor told her she had not done herself any good by such an exhibition. She was no stranger to the Court. It was a sad thing she thought she was always in the right and every body else wrong. The magistrates believed the statement of Mrs. Caddy, and defendant would have to be bound over in her own surety of £5, and another surety in the same sum to keep the peace. As this was not forthcoming defendant was ordered below.

1884 Mar 25 - Dorset County Express and Agricultural Gazette:

Last Thursday the defendant abused her, and said she was a prostitute. Witness wanted her to leave her home; had given her notice 20 times, but she wouldn't go. On the 13th defendant called her a common prostitute, and other similar epithets in the open streets.—Defendant told a long story of complainant always being drunk, and abusing her, but the Bench bound her down in the sum of £S, and on surety of £5, to keep the peace for three months.

Twenty One Times Convicted. - Emily Mendenhall, a wellknown face at the polece court, and who was the first placed on "the blank list" in the borough, was charged with vagrancy. P.C. Sansford found prisoner sleeping in the attic of an unoccupied building on the Radipole Road at 1.40 this morning. She had her cape for a pillow, boots off, and clothes unfastened. He brought her to the police station, and on being searched was found to be without means. Prisoner, who is well known for her loquacious vocabulary, kept up a running comment whilst the constable gave his evidence. She denied that she was asleep, but had only "popped" into the house for shelter from the rain, and the policeman "popped" in after her. Mr Rowe told her that there were 20 previous cases against her, but on this occasion the magistrates would deal leniently with her by fining her 5s or seven days. Prisoner: Well, I cannot pay a farthing, because I have nothing to pay money for.

Marriage Notes for James George Mendenhall and Emily Greenham

1881 Aug 06 - Southern Times and Dorset County Herald:
James Mendenhall was summoned for assulting his wife. Defendent said his wife was ill in bed, but he wished the case be gone into. The Mayor siad she must appear and sent for her. The husband stated she told him she was too ill to come. The Mayor said he would send and see if the woman was ill on account of the man's violence. Defendent begged to differ from the Mayor; if there was anything the matter with her it was because she had fallen downstairs. The wife afterwards appeared, and said on Wednesday night last defendent came home between eleven and twelve from the theatre, and struck her as she was getting into bed, giving her what the magistrates saw on her face. Defendent, who kept interrupting his wife in the evidence she gave, was ordered to be removed to the cells. When all the business but this had been finished the Mayor desired Supt. Vickery to see defendent and ascertain if he would conduct himself properly, becuase if not the charge would be adjourned until Saturday. The man afterwards appeared and behaved himself much better. The wife in continuation of her evidence, said she had been married seven years, but defendent had been continually ill treating her. She had not had him summoned before, as she had got out of his way, but she could not stand it any longer. Defendent said on Monday night she was brought home beastly drunk by two young men. He had given her 12s for a month's rent but she had spent it in drink. She had been fined 5s at the court for being drunk. He had food at home spoiling because the wife would not take the trouble to cook it. They might pass what sentence they liked; but he wanted a judicial separation. The Mayor asked the husband what he would allow his wife for a month to live apart; he said 2s a-week. The Mayor told him that was not enough, and asked the wife what she would be content with; she said 4s a-week. The husband said he would not pay that, whereupon the Mayor told him he must pay it for a month; they would then both have to appear before the Court again and if the husband could show any good cause why a reduction should be made they would consider the application. Defendent wanted to pay the 4s at the end of the first week, but this the Mayor would not allow, and he made him bring the money, and pay it over to her, which to did with the remark "I hope it will do you good".

1881 Aug 09 - Dorset County Express and Agricultural Gazette:
WIFE-BEATERS: At the Borough Petty Sessiors, on Friday, before the Mayor (R. N. Howard, Esq.), and Dr. Drew, James Mendenhall was summoned by his wife Emily for assulting her. The husband, a spare young fellow, appeared, but not the wife, and on enquiry he stated that she stayed abed, declaring she was too ill to appear.—The magistrates sent the police after her, and they brought a small woman, who might have looked young but for being much worn. Her husband fiercely lectured her when she took the book, the Bench, cautioned him not to intimidate her.—She stated that her husband was continually ill-using her, and on Wednesday he came home between 11 and 12, and struck her.—The husband continned to address her fiercely, and, after several cautions, he was sent down into the cells, and Mrs. Mendenhall told to sit down. After another case had been heard, Mendenhall was fetched up again, and he was more quiet.—She stated she had been married nearly seven years; on this day her husband struck her several blows; he had done so before; but she had not complained, for she had starved herself rather than do so. She had never got him into debt, but had paid her way, and had got him a comfortable meal when he struck her.—Defendant, however, said his wife was brought home last Monday evening beastly drunk by two young gentlemen, and he had to undress her and put her to bed. She neglected her house, and his beans, and pees and lettuce were spoiling at home, and some meat she pretended to put in salt was full of maggots; she had pawned things, and even her clothes off her back. Tbe Bench might pass what sentence they liked on him, but he a "judicial" separation.— What would he allow her? asked the Mayon—Two shillings a week said Mendenhall; but Mayor said that was not enough.—The husband returned she had no children, and on his wife offering to take 4s week, he refused, but would give 2s.6d.—The Mayor thought he ought to give 4s a week for a month, and at the end of that time the case should be heard again.— Mendenhall protested he'd only pay it for a month. He had allowed his earnings before to keep house, &c. Ultimately he went home and got the first 4s, and declared he wouldn't go to the house again; and she must pay for that. The wife returned she couldn't; the house must be given up.—The Mayor remarkeed it was evident there were faults on both sides. After delay, Mendenhall paid his wife the first 4s., saying: I hope it will do you good.

1883 Jul 24 - Dorset County Express and Agricultural Gazette:
A BRUTAL HUSBAND—At the Guildhall on Friday, before the Mayor (R. N. Howard, Dr. Drew, and J. E. Rothman, Esq., James Mendenhall was charged by his wife with having assulted her on the previous Tuesday night.—The woman said defendant came home very drunk and kicked her violently. He prevented her from crying out by taking hold of her throat and almost choking her. He was continualiy ill-treating her and the black eye she now had was caused by a blow from him three weeks ago. He had been ordered by the magistrates to allow her a separate maintainance but had only given her 4s. She had been in the union three weeks but had consented to come out and live with him on his promishig to behave better. He had, however, continually ill-treated her, and kept her short of food.—Defendant said his wife was always drunk. He was a Good Templar for eight months in order to induce her to lay off drinking; but she only abstained for three days. Sbe pawned everything she could in order to get drink —The Bench bound the defendant down in the sum of £IO to keep the peace for three months, and advised the parties to separate.

1896 Oct 06 - Weymouth Telegram:
'A READY MONEY SHOP."—James Mendenhall, hawker, and Emily, his wife, were summoned, the former for being drunk and disorderly, and the latter with using obscene language on September 19th. — P.C. Hallett proved turning the man out of the Porter's Arms, St. Mary Street, about eleven o'clock at night. He refused to go away, and on taking him to the lock up, the female defendant interfered by using bad language.—Both were fined 5s. or seven days' hard labour. —The male defendant asked for time for payment, when the Mayor informed the man "this is a ready money shop." (Laughter.)—The woman, who is an old offender, observed, "I'll not pay the money, I tell you straight. If my husband is fool enough to do so he can. Give me the seven days any time." (Laughter.)
